CHURCH NEWS
Thank you to everyone who helped make both of our churches look so lovely at Easter and the donated lilies gave every-where such a wonderful perfume. The lucky winners of the April Money Draw were Albert and Molly Lambert, Sally and Tim Fogden and Libby Balaam. Lots of people have asked for a more informal worship tied to our rural setting and in the afternoon, so we will be introducing one at 3.30pm on the first Sunday of every month. Each of these services will be different and may move about the village. A list of future different 3.30pm services are on the church noticeboards. Our service this month, on 5 May, Matthew Hawthorne has kindly offered to take us on a tractor ride. (This one will take about 2 hours.) There are a limited number of seats so please contact Marion Cusworth tel. 269492 should you wish to join us. Our APCM will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday 16 May in the Village Hall. Now that there is a compost area in the churchyard all dead flowers and foliage may be discarded there, but please put any old silk or plastic flowers and wreaths in the normal waste bin. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jacklin family after the death of June Jacklin. Marion Cusworth

VILLAGE HALL
By now most of you should have received an envelope containing draw tickets. We are holding a St George’s Day draw on 23 April as a fundraiser for the Hall. If you are able to buy the tickets yourself, or sell to friends and family, this would be a great help in our fundraising efforts. Please return tickets to the Hall or to Sue Jay at Bloomfield Farmhouse, Mill Road Honington. If you would like more, or haven’t had them put through your door, they are available at the Hall or from Sue. Good Luck and thank you for your support. Sue Jay
The Village Hall Committee would like to thank all those who pledged a monthly contribution or gave a donation for their generous support of the hall. We have managed to find several ways to reduce our energy costs, which will help avoid the “winter crisis” in future. We have obtained a grant via West Suffolk Council to develop the field behind the Hall which we rent from Euston Estates. This money can only be spent on outside groundwork and will enable us to get full use of the area. Linda Howe
I hope everyone had a good Easter. As many will be aware the Honington & Sapiston Village Hall website is being updated by Harriet van der Lande and is more user friendly and brighter. CHURCH NEWS
We were all shocked and saddened with the news of the sudden death of Gill Farrow, a dear friend to so many people in our villages and a very loyal member of our church over so many years. We are also sad to learn that Helen Bedford’s dad died last month. May they both rest in peace. In April we will be going back to holding a Coffee Morning on the first Tuesday of each month, so we hope to see you on Tuesday, 2 April in the village hall at 10.30am. Last month when we had the Monthly Money Draw the lucky winners were Ian PP, Nettie Mendez and Albert and Molly, so congratulations. In May, on the 1st Sunday of the month we are going to be holding an extra service with a difference at 3.30 in the afternoon, this follows from a discussion held when everyone in the village was invited to let us know what type of service they would like held in the future. Many of you in Honington and Sapiston will remember my dear Sue who lived with me at Manor Farm House for 5 years before we moved to North Norfolk. March has been another busy month. Four Beavers joined the village litter pick, helping to make the village more attractive for people and animals. We have been meeting some millipedes, bearded dragons and geckos. We've had our Beavers got talent (BGT) where we had a comedian win! We've learnt about Beavers in other countries and enjoyed some Easter fun! Cubs have been making some lovely crafts for their Mums, they had a games night, made some lovely Easter crafts and celebrated the festival of holi. Scouts have been using their paracord skills to create a mother's day present, been working on their air activities 2 badge, learnt how to pack a rucksack, and enjoyed a games night. HONINGTON CEVCP SCHOOL
We have been busy celebrating Numbers Day, World Book Day and Red Nose Day. We have held parents’ evenings and also invited parents in to take part in experiments with their children to coincide with Science Week. Sports clubs on offer this half term are Football, Dodgeball and Multi-skills and some of budding basketballers took part in an inter-school com- petition at Beyton.
We recently had our SIAMS (church school) inspection and the report has now been finalised and published. It is an amaz- ing report and we are delighted with how well the Inspector understood the strengths and vision of our community and what makes our school so special. The inspector said "Pupils, staff and governors live out the Christian vision in every aspect of school life. It is the universal motivating force behind everyone's shared commitment to high aspiration for them- selves and for each other". Summer Term begins on Friday, 15 April.

THE BRIDGE
Since the bridge was damaged last April, the Parish Council has on numerous occasions asked Suffolk County Council for a date when the repairs will be carried out. Messrs KEIR visited the village in June and carried out an estimate for the repair that would be subject of an insurance claim. KEIR lost the maintenance contract in September and subsequent enquiries by the PC failed to obtain a date for the repair. If you wish to register your personal disappointment, you may wish to write to SCC CEO: Ms Nicola Beach, Chief Executive Officer, Suffolk County Council, Endeavour House, Ipswich, Suffolk IP1 2BX chiefexecutivepa@suffolk.gov.uk
VILLAGE HALL
Hello everyone, the March diary at the hall is looking good and bookings are flooding in for the rest of the year, so if you are planning an event please visit the website www.hsvh.org.uk and fill out a booking enquiry form and book your date to avoid disappointment. Len Newman our chairman (along with other members of the committee) are working hard to reduce running costs at the hall after the escalation of costs last year. It was decided at the last committee meeting to no longer run the app as it would cost too much to keep it operating.
Community Lunch will be on Thursday, 14 March. On the menu bangers & mash, or chicken, leek & ham pie followed by fruit crumble, tea and coffee - £8.00. To place your order drop me an email siripp@live.com or call and leave a message on 01359 268880 on or before 15.00 on Friday, 8 March. Raffle and Play Your Cards Right. Doors open at 12.30, lunch 13.00.

EUSTON RURAL PASTIMES EVENT
Since the inaugural Euston Rural Pastimes Event in June 1991 the annual celebration of all countryside activities new and old, the sum of £626,000 has been raised and distributed to local charities including St Nicholas Hospice, The East Anglian Air Ambulance and Churches of the Blackbourne team. A very generous legacy is part of this total. Held in the wonderful surroundings of Euston Park, with tremendous support from the owners and staff of Euston Estate, the event was entirely run by a team of volunteers, keen to work as part of a team to raise money for charity by attracting large crowds of the public to see the ring events, classic cars, tractors, steam and stationary engines, along with trade stands, craft stalls, Church flower festival and heavy horse show among the many attractions. Many families came year after year, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. The various organisers over the years of the event would like to thank everyone that has been involved, whether as exhibitor, stall holder, helper or by attending for helping to make the event what it was. Since having to cancel the 2020 event owing to the Covid 19 pandemic, the 2021, 2022 and 2023 events were held on a much reduced scale, still raising significant sums of money. It has been decided, as the time comes for all good things to end, this event is no different, and we can finish on a high, with many wonderful memories and thanks to everyone involved over the years for a superb job done. BLACKBOURNE TREE GROUP
We are so grateful to the Parish Council for the financial support given to us for a further year. I have planted a cotoneaster in the school grounds with the assistance of Oak class. It was chosen as, unlike oaks, it will survive shady conditions. Our first work day is Saturday, 2 March at 09.00, when we will continue the path clearance started in January with the invaluable help of David van Lande. Our annual AGM meeting will be at 19.00 at the village hall on Thurs- day, 7 March, followed by supper, partners included. Please let me know if you can join us. gilessmith3@gmail.com

HONINGTON AND SAPISTON WI
This month our speaker Sara Doig gave an informative talk entitled The Real Basil Brown. Basil Brown was involved in the discoveries at Sutton Hoo but Sara gave us information about many aspects of the life of this Rickinghall man who was interested in archaeology and astronomy and kept detailed notes of his work. After refreshments Tricia gave details of many federation events as detailed in The Hive. Suzannah has organised a trip to the Theatre Royal to see backstage and hear some history. This takes place on Saturday, 16 March at 10.30 at a cost of £10 or £5 for National Trust members. The competition “a found treasure" was judged by the speaker. Val N was 3rd with a rock/bone (I wasn't sure which) found on a beach, Lucy was 2nd with her great grandmother's WI badge found when her house was cleared and Harriet was 1st with 2 small wooden toys found when they pulled up some floorboards. Sally proposed a scheme for sending postcards to people in care homes. Many residents of care homes miss the news of their former villages and a monthly card with a little local news would be welcome. Sally has lots of postcards available to those taking part. If you would like to come along to a meeting and see what the WI has to offer, please contact Tricia tel 268442 or email honingtonandsapistonwi@gmail.com to find out more. Or come along!
1ST HONINGTON (RAF) SCOUT GROUP
February has seen Beavers celebrating children's mental health day with some neighbouring colonies, taking part in yoga, and crafting a breathing dragon and calming glitter bottle. Also, we celebrated Pancake Day, found out about our founder Baden-Powell and went for a hike at Bradfield woods. Cubs have been completing some airfix models, these took a total of 3 weeks, finishing the month with a game of bowling. Scouts have been continuing to develop their navigation skills, they took part in some amazing pancake art and practiced their pioneering to create camp gadgets. If anyone is interested in helping as a leader or as a trustee please do get in touch. There are many different ways you can help the group. Jan Neary neary532@gmail.com

VILLAGE HALL APPEAL
Like every home and business, the Hall has had rising fuel costs, and although we have found ways of reducing our energy costs, our charges for the boiler’s wood chips and electricity have risen sharply recently. It currently costs over £100 a day to run the Hall.
At the same time the rebate we get from the government has not increased. We continue to seek grant funding and have been very grateful to the Parish Council and the Christmas Fair for helping us to manage so far.
Therefore, to avoid having to close the hall for the winter months we are launching an appeal to seek to raise funds to meet the rising costs of fuel for the Village Hall.
If you feel able to give us either a one-off donation, or a monthly donation it would help us to keep the Hall open. (We have already had an offer of £10 a month from one parishioner). The Standing Order only needs completing if you are making a MONTHLY donation.
If you feel able to contribute any amount, however small, please complete the enclosed forms and return to Linda Howe (Harlequin Cottage, Church Road, Honington) or Ian Patterson-Parker at the hall.
HONINGTON CEVCP SCHOOL
We have had a busy start to the term and have welcomed several new families to our school community. We celebrated Epiphany with a lovely service from Vicar Karen and you may have seen us walking around the village wearing crowns and following the star! We have had several sports clubs start this term – basketball, yoga and football which have been well supported. We had a visit from a UK Parliament representative who spoke to our older children about the work of Parliament – the role of MPs, the House of Lords and how Laws are made – very interesting and informative.
CHURCH NEWS
Congratulations to the winners in the January Monthly Money Draw, they were Sally and Tim Fogden, Robert Balaam and Albert and Molly Lambert. Thank you to everybody who helps to fill up the box in the church porch with their used printer ink cartridges. I was able to send off a full box, the money it raises goes towards the running costs of the church. There is a replacement box ready for your donations! Thank you also to all those who came to our discussion in church regarding what kind of services people would like us to hold in the future. A date for your diaries: on 23rd March we are holding a fund raising Afternoon Tea with musical accompaniment in the Village Hall. Tickets are available from Marion Cusworth tel 269492. We will be holding another Soup and Cheese lunch in the Hall on Tuesday 6th February
12.30 for 1pm. Easter is early this year, where we hope to decorate the church with beautiful lilies that are in memory of those we have loved. Should you wish to donate towards them, please contact Marion in good time so that they can be ordered from the florist. Sadly Claire, our organist, feels she is unable to carry on playing for us on a regular basis due to her ill health. So we are looking to find someone who could replace her. If anyone can help us in our search, please do contact Marion Cusworth. Our Rector Karen Burton can be contacted on 07546 491388.
CAMERA CLUB
Our first meeting of the year was a great success with an informative talk on drone photography. The guest speaker showed a great range of images, many familiar to us at ground level, but viewed directly overhead was an amazing and extremely interesting experience. The images collated from East Anglia and then from around the UK coastline had many attendees keen on acquiring their own drone!
Our February 20th meeting has a theme of "Musically Related-Song or Instrument". Come along and see what goes on.
6.45 pm in the main hall. Call Howard 01359268763 for more info.
HONINGTON AND SAPISTON WI
The roll call, A Childhood Friend, elicited some lovely responses, of friendships lasting 60 years in some cases.
Sally Fogden was our speaker, on the subject of The Rural Coffee Caravan. Sally gave an entertaining, brief talk about the caravan, from its inception to its current form. Christine Congdon, a member who volunteers with the caravan, also helped to explain its role. The caravan visits isolated villages in Suffolk, bringing good coffee, lovely cakes and information for residents where needed. It is particularly important to have such a service in rural communities which can be isolated.
The four resolutions were read aloud and discussed. These are matters of concern to us all, nationally, and the WI commits to raising awareness of the issue, chosen from the four options, politically and generally.
Tricia talked through some information about the WI both locally and nationally so that newer members could feel better informed.
Gill Farrow won the competition, A Limerick about the Coffee Caravan, with Anne Walker 2nd and Chris Leiper and Carol Littlewood joint 3rd.
We were pleased to donate the money we had saved by not exchanging Christmas cards to the Caravan.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13th February when our speaker will be historian Sarah Doig on The Real Basil Brown. If you would like to try the WI, do come along - or contact Tricia tel. 268442 or email honingtonandsapis- tonwi@gmail.com to find out more.
