On 14 October our speaker was Adrian Tindall who heads the Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides and his talk was titled:
“Persons of Quality” the story of Bury St Edmund’s Athenaeum.
This was a fascinating history of the Athenaeum through time since the Abbey was dissolved in 1539, and the first building was built on the site. The current listed building has stood on Angel Hill since 1674 – it’s been a public assembly room (ballroom, card room, tearoom), then became the Subscription Rooms, becoming the Athenaeum in 1854, a cultural institution. In 1858 the observatory was added (currently closed to the public). Sold to West Suffolk Council in 1935 it became used for conferences, weddings, exhibitions and auctions and then during WWII it provided comfort, entertainment etc for troops stationed nearby.
